Acrylic on Canvas, 20 x 16, October 2020
The worker, with a broom, a mask, and supplies, depicts the work of an ordinary person in the middle of an uprising, during a pandemic. The background shows ashes on the Wells Fargo brick building, which was damaged by fire the previous night. The painting is based on an original photo taken by the artist in May 2020.
Workers are the everyday folks making the revolution possible, simplistic, and ordinary. The piece is a style in American realism for contemporary movement-building in the age of black lives matter. It asked what nonviolence looks like during an uprising stemming from extrajudicial police murder and violence. This piece suggests action and simplicity and helps the forming of conscience on what is a nonviolent struggle.
